Chris Hadfield

Hello, my name is Rainy Willis. Today I am going to be telling you about the astronaut of my choice. His name is Chris Hadfield and he has always been my personal favorite. This is the shorter version of his story; from how he came from a humble corn farmer to a famous astronaut.

Chris was born on August 29, 1959, to a humble corn farmer and his wife. He attended Milton District high school in 1977, he continued on to get a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering (with honors). Then he attended the royal military college in Kingston in 1982 as well as conducting post-graduate research at the University of Waterloo, Ontario. He went on to revive a master of science in aviation systems at the University of Tennessee in 1992 that same year he was chosen to become one of the four new Canadian astronauts out of 5,330 applicants!

You're' probably scratching your head right now thinking why in the world is she talking about space. Well you are right I should be talking about the ocean but Chris may be able to help with that. I am going to see how Chris Hadfield might have been of help to the ocean if he had chosen that path. He had a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering which could play a big part in building submarines or other machines capable of helping to clean and filter out the ocean's pollutants. There are several operations and machines in place around the world such as the Interceptor. The Interceptor was launched in September 2019 by a non-profit Dutch organization called the Ocean Cleanup. This machine catches plastic pollutants in river mouths and bays before it actually reaches the ocean which is just as important as the ocean itself and along with that, it is solar powered which means that this machine is doing very minimal damage to the environment.

How did Chris Hadfield's skills help him in his past line of work as an astronaut? Well to start mechanical engineering is a great step for mankind seeing as the ISS was needing repair and constant experiments and tests were being done aboard. Secondly, he attended the royal military college which would help him well to be able to follow leaders and take instructions well. Lastly, he had already had previous experience flying. when he was 15 he won a glider pilot scholarship and a powered pilot scholarship at age 16. A previous background history in flying would definitely help him to be more in his comfort zone even while out of the earth's zone.
